Finding answers to the food crisis- a European food movement23 August 2011
Food campaigners from across Europe came together to plan a better food system.
After a five day food forum in Austria food campaigners adopted the first European Declaration on Food Sovereignty. This is a plan for how the food system should be improved.
We call upon the people and social movements in Europe to engage, together with us, in all our struggles to take control of our food systems and Build the Movement for Food Sovereignty in Europe NOW!
European Declaration on Food Sovereignty
The 400 attendees were all from different parts of food system. From young farmers to urban gardeners and from consumers to access to land movements.
There were Friends of the Earth local groups there from Europe, Nigeria and Guatamala.
What is Food Sovereignty?
Food sovereignty is about making sure that people have enough healthy, environmentally friendly and sustainable food.
The Nyeleini Food Sovereignty movement aims to reclaim our food and agriculture from corporations, banks and short term profiteering. And it brings people that care about food from around the world together.
What happened at the Food Forum?
The aim was to strengthen the movement for food sovereignty in Europe. They wrote the declaration which sets out what change we need.
They want to:
- change how food is produced and consumed
- change how food is distributed
- improve work and social conditions in food and agricultural systems
- reclaim the right to our commons
- challenge public policies governing our food and agricultural systems.
Stay tuned for updates on plans to spread the movement in the UK.
