Public demand inquiry into Big Six
24 October 2011

A survey has revealed that 90% of Brits back Friends of the Earth's call for an inquiry into the Big Six.

The poll, released by Friends of the Earth, also shows that half of people blame company greed for energy price hikes.

Prices have doubled since 2004 and the Government is failing to act to create a fair market for consumers.

The Big Six are making soaring profits by keeping the UK hooked on expensive imported fuels - instead of growing affordable, clean British energy.

The Government is cosying up to the energy companies instead of calling time on the big energy market stitch-up.

Andy Atkins, Executive Director, Friends of the Earth

Martin Lewis, creator of Moneysavingexpert.com, joined Friends of the Earth's calls for radical changes to the energy system.

Responding to the Government's failure to tackle the issue he said:

Energy companies' job isn't to keep us warm, it's to make money for shareholders.

It's the job of politicians and regulators to ensure people aren't choosing between heating and eating.

Ministers are advising customers to shop around to avoid being ripped off. But this alone won't solve the problem.

We need radical change to bring prices down for the many.
