Over 5 million people covered by strong local CO2 targets
Over 5 million people in England are now covered by strong and ambitious local targets to cut CO2 emissions.
Manchester, Bristol and a number of London boroughs are among the councils leading the way in reducing carbon.
They have committed to cutting their emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2020.
These councils know that action to cut carbon will benefit the local community by boosting the economy and creating new green jobs.
Action like this at the local level is key if national emissions reductions targets are to be met.
There are also clear benefits for local people too:
- well insulated, energy-efficient homes
- improved public transport
- cleaner, greener energy
Local Carbon Budgets
But it is vital that the rest of England and the UK is not left behind.
Friends of the Earth is campaigning for local carbon budgets to drive emissions cuts nationwide.
Local carbon budgets would mean that all local authorities have the support to lead effective carbon reduction strategies across their local area.
Please ask your MP to support legislation for local carbon budgets.
