What are the talks about?
1 December 2008

View of the world

The climate talks in Poznan, Poland are an important milestone towards an international climate agreement.

This is due to be finalised in December 2009 in Copenhagen.

The agreement will look at how we can increase global efforts to:

  • Reduce greenhouse gases.
  • Avoid dangerous climate change.
  • Support sustainable development.

What will be discussed?

The talks will focus on:

  • Cutting carbon dioxide emissions
Who needs to do what, by when and how.
  • Support from the developed world
How poorer countries will be supported to cope with the effects of climate change.
  • Access to technology
How all countries can use existing clean technologies.

    What decisions will be made?

The final international agreement will not be reached until the Copenhagen climate talks in December 2009.

But the talks in Poznan will help shape the final outcome in Copenhagen.

What would we like to see from the talks?

We'd like to see developed countries agree to:

    1. Cut emissions by at least 40% by 2020.
    2. Provide at least $200 billion/year support to developing countries from 2013.

    What about carbon offsetting?

The UK Government is proposing that industrialised countries could do this by investing in forests.

Friends of the Earth would like to see this scheme rejected.
