Energy Bill a 'dog's breakfast' says Shadow Minister
28 March 2011

Meg Hillier, shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, called the Government's new energy law 'a dog's breakfast' at a Stop Climate Chaos public meeting - and vowed to push hard for a stronger deal.

The Hackney South and Shoreditch MP was speaking about the Energy Bill at the event part organised by Hackney and Tower Hamlets Friends of the Earth in London.

We want to support something that will reduce energy emissions from homes. But this is a bit of a dog's breakfast frankly. We're disappointed that our amendments in Committee haven't been taken up and we're going to push hard in the House of Commons to see if we can't get some changes.

Fight climate change

All over the country people are challenging MPs to do more to fight against climate change as part of the Big Climate Reconnection.

Helping improve the Government's new Energy Bill, currently being debated in Parliament, is a crucial first step.

A fully charged Energy Bill could help the UK drastically slash its carbon footprint, with nationwide plans to insulate homes and install renewable energy.

These cost-effective measures would mean

  • Thousands of new jobs
  • Warmer homes
  • Cheaper energy bills.

Charities unite

Speaking at the meeting, Keith Allott, head of climate change at WWF, echoed calls for an Energy Bill that would go the distance.

Climate change is already affecting millions of vulnerable people around the world. Oxfam's policy advisor Tracy Carty called on Meg Hillier to help ensure developing countries get the cash they need to adapt to climate change and grow cleanly. And she asked for a Robin Hood Tax to ensure enough money is available.
