Join the energy revolution22 October 2008
Friends of the Earth has launched a new campaign in support of renewable energy.
Renewable energy is power generated from non-polluting sources like the wind, sun and waves.
But less than 2% of the UK's energy comes from renewable power - Sweden generates around 40%.
Renewable energy agreement
Last year the Government signed a European renewable energy agreement - the Renewables Directive. The Directive says the UK must get 15% of UK energy from renewable sources by 2020.
Now the Government is trying to wriggle out of its commitments. It's put forward a series of proposals to weaken the Directive.
Friends of the Earth is calling on the Government to support a strong Directive and to lead Britain to a cleaner and more prosperous future.
Homegrown energy
Renewable energy can give us a clean and long lasting energy supply. But only if the Government supports it.
The Government is due to publish its Renewables Strategy in July 2009. The Strategy needs to show how the UK will meet the 15% target.
We need to make sure the Government supports a strong renewable energy strategy at home and in Europe.
