Big changes on renewables
15 July 2009

Our campaign for an ambitious programme to make renewables our number one source of energy has had a big impact.

Renewable energy is power made from non-polluting sources like the wind, sun and waves.

What's in a strategy?

The UK is committed to producing 15% of energy from renewable sources by 2020.

Government has now published its eagerly-awaited Renewable Energy Strategy outlining how we will meet this target.

Campaign success

Our supporters all around the country built up pressure for a strong and sustainable strategy. They signed thousands of postcards backing the campaign.

The hard work of our local group network gathering the support of local businesses, organisations and MPs also paid off.

The Government has promised to change the rules to prioritise renewables.

Changing roles

Ofgem is responsible for managing the energy industry. It's the Government body that monitors power companies.

We've been calling for Ofgem to tackle climate change in its work and to promote renewable energy.

The Government has now agreed to make sure this happens.

This is fantastic news. It will play a huge role in building a low-carbon energy system.

Looking ahead

The strategy's commitment to radically changing the way we use energy is welcome - now all we need is delivery.

Government must make sure councils approve more green energy projects and put climate change at the heart of the planning system.
