Time to give power to the people
16 February 2012

Community energy could break the power that the Big Six energy companies have over us and our bills.

new report by Big Society think-tank ResPublica claims that locally-produced green energy can empower communities and help reduce fuel poverty.

The Big Six control 99% of our energy. They are keeping us hooked on expensive imported fossil fuels.

Locally-produced energy could break their grip on the energy market and help tackle climate change.

Next steps

The report - which we support - calls on the Government to:

  • Tap into the potential of communities to create their own clean energy.
  • Make it easier for local people to come together to produce green energy.

Boosting community energy schemes will enable more cash-strapped households to free themselves from the power of the Big Six and earn money from clean British energy. It's time for Ministers to really give power to the people.
