Richmond and Twickenham vote for stronger Energy Bill1 June 2011
The audience at a recent public meeting in Richmond and Twickenham voted 152-1 in favour of councils becoming local leaders in the race to reduce the UK's greenhouse gas emissions.
Richmond and Twickenham Friends of the Earth and the Stop Climate Chaos coalition organised the public meeting with two local MPs:
- Zac Goldsmith, who is on the Energy Bill Committee.
- Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Over 150 people were at the meeting to hear from their MPs.
Paula White of Richmond and Twickenham Friends of the Earth said:
We're really pleased that Zac is on the Energy Bill Committee. It's a special responsibility, and the test will be whether he backs key amendments to strengthen the legislation.
Although he didn't commit to supporting our three key asks at the meeting, Mr Goldsmith has agreed to meet again to discuss them in more detail.
I would welcome hundreds of letters from people in this constituency asking me to push these points. It allows me to take the conversation further with the Ministers.

Also speaking were Martyn Williams from Friends of the Earth, Colin Butfield from WWF and Paul Cook from Tearfund.
Take action
A strong energy bill will lead to:
- Big cuts in climate changing emissions
- Warmer homes and cheaper fuel bills
- Tens of thousands of new jobs
Please ask Energy and Climate Change Minister, Greg Barker, to support a strong Energy Bill.
