A rights and justice training day for Irish traveller families18 January 2011
Friends of the Earth recently held a Family Training day; jointly with the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain, the British Human Rights Institute and forum theatre company, Cardboard Citizens.
Last December approximately 70 people attended the event at Westminster Cathedral - mostly Irish Traveller women and children from in and around London.
"Irish travellers are one of the most marginalised groups in society" ( Commission for Racial Equality, 2006).
Many travellers live in poor environments which impact on their health and quality of life.
Participants explored human rights and environmental justice issues through a series of drama activities and discussion groups.
A participant mentioned that "It was important to come to events like today to get familiar with [my] rights and how to use them."
Overall it was a fun and inspiring day - even Santa turned up!
