Harnessing hydro power in Saddleworth
20 March 2012

Local residents in Saddleworth, near Oldham, are setting up their own micro hydro-electricity plant by the Dove Stone reservoir.

By autumn 2013, the directors of Saddleworth Hydro hope that a 51 kW turbine will be generating enough electricity to power 45 homes.

The project is supported by Manchester Friends of the Earth.

When conventional power supplies are under pressure, I believe renewable energy schemes such as ours can help provide an alternative solution.

Bill Edwards, Director, Saddleworth Hydro

Saddleworth Community Hydro needs to raise £120,000. They've launched a share offer, open to anyone, and hope to offer interest of up to 4%.

A share prospectus is available and the share offer will remain open until 16 April 2012.

Friends of the Earth is calling for more support for clean British energy projects like Saddleworth Community Hydro - pleaseĀ sign our petition now.
