Shell fenceline communities speak out 13 August 2008
Shell's Annual General Meeting is an important opportunity for Shell's fenceline neighbours to get their voices heard.
Each year we support people who live next to Shell installations and projects to put their concerns to Shell.
This is one of their stories. Read the others.

Tell us a little about groundWork - the organisation you represent?
What we do is, we work with fenceline communities all over South Africa that live next to polluting industries.
We support their campaigns and also help them link up. So that their voice becomes stronger and they can learn from each other.
What's the community like that lives next to Shell in Durban?
It's black communities, Indian and coloured communities. There is a white community - but the largest group of people are black.
What are the main problems with Shell?
Really it's the ageing infrastructure in Durban. Previously there have been leaks and pipeline bursts.
I'd like to see emission reduction - although they say they are doing that - it's even not up to World Health Organisation standards.
They don't even have an emissions reduction plan.
Siziwe on Shell's pollution
Do you think the UK Government has a role to play?
Yes, because although Shell is a multinational - London is it's base.
