Admiral Nelson calls for action on shipping emissions13 July 2009
A famous figure from maritime history has called for urgent action to tackle emissions from international shipping.

Admiral Nelson calls on the IMO to act.
Lord Admiral Nelson joined Friends of the Earth campaigners outside a crucial meeting at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Missing emissions
Emissions from both shipping and aviations were left out of the Kyoto protocol in 1997.
The IMO was given responsibility for reducing these emissions. But it has made little progress in the past 12 years.
Ticking clock
Little time is left for the shipping sector to agree measures to cut its emissions.
This IMO meeting is the final chance before the next major international climate change talks.
But little progress is expected before the talks in Copenhagen in December.
Global effort
Friends of the Earth believes any agreement in Copenhagen must include shipping emissions.
It must also demand rapid action from the IMO to reduce these emissions.
Take action
- Urge world leaders
to put climate first at the Copenhagen talks.
