New Energy Secretary must amend solar plans
9 February 2012

Friends of the Earth urges new Energy Secretary Ed Davey to sort out solar chaos and save jobs.

His Department is expected to publish the results of a public consultation into the Government's solar subsidy plans today.

The response to the public consultation on the disastrous solar subsidy proposals is a golden opportunity to sort out the mess the Coalition has created.

New direction

We agree solar subsidies should fall due to lower installation costs - but the current proposals would create chaos and threaten thousands of jobs. We are calling on the new Energy Secretary to amend these plans.

Legal action

Before Christmas we took the Government to court over its abrupt plans to cut solar subsidy payments. The judge agreed the plans were unlawful - the Government then appealed and lost. Now it wants to appeal again.

Ed Davey should abandon any further legal challenges.

Sensible reforms to the solar subsidy scheme would:

  • Save up to 29,000 solar jobs.
  • Enable more homes to plug into clean UK energy and protect them from rising gas bills.
  • Prove the Government's commitment to a low-carbon future.

More than 12,000 people have already signed a letter to David Cameron calling for an end to the legal action.
