Stopping incineration in Shrewsbury
27 September 2010

Shrewsbury Friends of the Earth show how hard work and dedication can lead to success, as they force plans for a proposed incinerator to be abolished.

The incinerator was proposed by waste contractors Veolia for a site near Shrewsbury at an estimated cost of £60 million. However, after a four hour debate it was rejected by Shropshire Council.

This was the climax of several years' campaigning by a local coalition. As well as Shrewsbury Friends of the Earth, it included allies No Burners in Shropshire, Safe Waste in Shropshire and many local residents.

Many different methods were used to get their point across. These included campaign websites, door-to-door leafleting, posters, public meetings, running stories in the local media and campaign stalls.

Hundreds of  objections won round local councillors and the MP.

Advice and support were also provided by Friends of the Earth campaigners and the UK Without Incineration network (UKWIN).

This really is beyond our wildest dreams. This is a wonderful example of ordinary people standing up against the might of a large corporation and winning!
