To celebrate Friends of the Earth's 40th anniversary, I've been talking to some of the supporters who've made it all possible.

By day Kate Eldridge (right) is a Company Secretary at The Co-operative; in her spare time she campaigns with her local Friends of the Earth group in Stockport.

"I'd always been interested in protecting the environment and I think that came from my mum," says Kate. "That and watching Blue Peter.

"If the council had an initiative to drive less my mum would record how much she was driving. We would always recycle too.

"At work I advise on company law and corporate governance.

It's important I work for an organisation that has rules that fit with my values - trying to reduce its carbon footprint and supporting Fair Trade.

"I'd been campaigning online at university and became involved with the Stockport group when it was first set up.

"I joined Friends of the Earth because it has a justice element as well as an environmental element. It's about people and what's fair to people.

"We campaigned on the Get Serious About CO2 campaign and as a result I'm really proud that Stockport agreed to reduce its emissions by 40% by 2020."

Wondering if there's a local group in your area? You can find out here.
