Supporter of the Week: Lisa Fairtlough
To celebrate Friends of the Earth's 40th anniversary, I've been talking to some of the supporters who've made it all possible. Lisa Fairtlough's (right) interest in environmental matters first took off at the launch of Concorde.
"It was Concorde that first got me steamed up about the environment.
"I'd read an article in The Times about its imminent launch, in 1969, and it shocked me.
"I objected to the damage it would do to the atmosphere, so I wrote a letter saying, "Dear Sirs, please may we live in peace without Concorde." I switched to The Guardian then.
I clearly remember an article about the future of the planet, and so I posted it out to politicians, thinkers, well-known names.
"It was around that time I joined Friends of the Earth.
"Together with my late husband, Gerard, we've donated a good whack. I'm still engaged with environmental issues - I'm thrilled about this Government's pledge on climate change, it's very encouraging."
Next week: Helena Wright. To see all the supporters I've interviewed, visit our 40th anniversary gallery.
