Scientists urge strong climate targets for 202024 March 2009
Leading climate scientists have called on the Government to make quicker and deeper emissions cuts.
A new report by the respected Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research demands urgent Government action on climate change.
The report says the UK must adopt at least 42% cuts in carbon emissions by 2020.
It also says cuts must be made here in the UK instead of paying other countries to cut emissions then counting them as ours.
Keeping up to date on climate change
The Tyndall scientists analysed the recommendations of the Committee on Climate Change (CCC).
In December 2008 the CCC suggested two targets for reducing carbon emissions:
- Interim target: 34% cuts by 2020
To be used before a global deal is agreed - Intended target: 42% cuts by 2020
To be adopted following a global deal on climate change
The Tyndall report welcomes the CCC's advice but warns:
- The science has moved on
Research since the CCC's report shows greater action is needed. - UK must adopt the intended target now
Show leadership by adopting a 42% target. - Make all the emissions cuts in the UK
Not paying other countries to make cuts while building polluting infrastructure at home.
Good for climate, good for Britain
Making the cuts in this country would also:
- Cut energy bills
A home insulation programme would reduce fuel poverty and cut emissions. - Create thousands of green jobs
Tackle recession and become world leader in low carbon technologies. - Improve energy security
Use Britain's abundant renewable energy resources.
Take action
We are in the midst of a climate crisis. But if we act now we will do much more than avoid catastrophe.
We will create a safer, cleaner and healthier world for everyone.
Friends of the Earth is calling on the Government to adopt an immediate target to cut greenhouse gas emissions within the UK by 42% by 2020.
Please email your MP asking them to support this call.
