West Dorset group promotes food and farming solutions1 July 2010
Local activists from West Dorset Friends of the Earth got public support for planet-friendly farming at this year's Bridport Food Fair.
They collected over 100 signatures on their petition urging Oliver Letwin MP to back our campaign to Fix the Food Chain.
The petition called on him to urge MPs drawn in the Private Members Ballot to table a Sustainable Livestock Bill aimed at tackling the impact of meat and dairy consumption in the UK.
The Bill would aim to reduce British meat and dairy factory farms' dependence on animal feed grown in South America.
Wildlife and rainforests are destroyed so that these feeds - such as soy - can be grown. This destruction also accelerates climate change.
Campaign success
Thanks to the hard work from local activists across the country, Robert Flello, Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent South - drawn second in the Ballot - agreed to table a Bill.
The proposed new law commits the Government to action to limit the wildlife and rainforest destruction caused by animal feeds.
It will also help UK farmers to thrive and ensure and ensure they are not squeezed by big business farming.
Linking the issues
The group used the Food Festival as a chance to gain support for other issues relating to food and farming here and internationally.
Members of the public took action to protect our food from GM contamination and curb the power of big supermarkets.
