Wind energy: Keeping the lights on10 July 2009
The UK is on the brink of an enormous energy opportunity.
A joint report from Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, WWF and RSPB calls on Government to promote wind power in the UK.
Keeping the lights on
The supply of wind energy is variable due to the nature of the wind.
In the past this has led to claims that relying on wind power on a large scale may cause power cuts.
But the new report by energy expert David Milborrow shows these fears have been over-exaggerated.
Developing wind energy both on and offshore will:
- Reduce carbon emissions
- Secure UK energy supplies
- Protect against fuel price changes
- Create skilled UK jobs.
Making wind a reality
But action is needed to develop a strong and sustainable wind industry in the UK.
The report calls on the Government to deliver a genuine shift in energy policy.
The Government must prioritise:
- Renewable energy and energy efficiency.
- Access to the National Grid for renewables.
- Financial support and incentives.
- Planning and siting of projects.
