Cameron's council calls for stronger Energy Bill
10 June 2011

District councillors in the Prime Minster's Witney constituency have joined the call for a stronger Energy Bill.

Councillor Harvey, cabinet member for the environment at West Oxfordshire District Council, has spoken out in favour of a new law to ensure all councils cut emissions in their area.

Cllr Harvey was speaking at a public meeting organised by Oxford Friends of the Earth and the Stop Climate Chaos coalition.

Friends of the Earth's parliamentary campaigner Liz Hutchins also spoke at the meeting.

Cllr Harvey praised some of the Government's green efforts, and called the Green Investment Bank "good news" for green business.

But Cllr Harvey said local action to cut carbon emissions was crucial.

He argued that a statutory duty would make it easier for councils like West Oxfordshire to prioritise cutting local emissions, and that the Energy Bill was the place to introduce such legislation.
