Following the successful Weakest Link show yesterday, Friends of the Earth International were back on the streets today to make sure the challegnge to big business was heard by everyone. Despite the drizzle - which risked turning the Anne Robinson masks to pulp - the action once again attracted lots of TV crews ad Friends of the Earth made its second appearance of the week on CNN.
Given the damp conditions outside, it was also time to take our challenge to corporations inside the World Economic Forum - where global leaders were meeting for their second day fo discussions beneath the Waldorf Astoria's grand chandeliers.
Tony Juniper, Director Designate of Friends of the Earth (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) and Martin Boesch, President of Pro Natura/Friends of the Earth Switzerland, took advantage of their official invitations to the WEF to deliver 1200 letters, addressed to business letters inside the Waldorf Astoria. The letters call on each chief executive to express their support for global rules for business, protecting people and the environment, by May 1 2002.
The letters were received with some concern by security, who refused to distribute them unless they could see the contents. The letters disappeared into the dark and murky processes of the World Economic Forum - and Friends of the Earth was left waiting for a response.
