There was a marked tension on the streets today as the police braced themselves for the largest of the schedule protests against the World Economic Forum. Streets around the Waldorf Astoria remained closed to traffic and pedestrians and sirens screamed around the city.

The march, which attracted more than 7,000 protestors objecting to the WEF, wound its way from Central Park to outside the Waldorf Astoria police cordon, complete with a dancing dragon, music and chants.

At the Public Eye on Davos (NY) conference, a packed hall heard leading Australian economists, Graham Dunkley and Steve Keen give an economic critique of free trade theory.

Meanwhile at the WEF, Bill Gates and Bono turned the media's attention to the social responsibilities of corporations with the announcement of their fund to fight AIDS in Africa.
