New Yorkers work up to find roads closed and police lining the streets today as tight security was put in place for the World Economic Forum opening tomorrow. Around 250 world leaders are expected to join business leaders for the annual meeting, which has moved this year from Davos, Switzerland to New York's Waldorf Astoria.

Following the large anti-globalisation protests in Genoa, Seattle and Prague, the police are expecting trouble, with 12,000 officers on duty. They have warned that anyone wearing a mask or balaclava could face arrest, while anyone carrying a backpack can expect to be searched.

Meanwhile the Public Eye on Davos (New York), organised by the Berne Declaration and Friends of the Earth, along with other environmental, human rights and faith groups, opens tomorrow - looking at alternatives to corporate-driven globalisation.
