4 February 2002

The final day of the WEF - time for business leaders to shake hands and go home to reflect on how they might do better over the coming year. The WEF marked the occasion by publishing the Environmental Sustainability Index - revealing poor performances by both the UK (98th in the world) and the US (51st) even using the crude measures the index employs - further proof, if proof is needed, that the current economic model just doesn't work.

Late in the day, Friends of the Earth's Tony Juniper received a call for meeting from Jose Maria Figueres, Head of NGO liaison at the WEF (and former President of Costa Rica) to discuss the issues. Perhaps corporate rules will be on the agenda next year - or perhaps Friends of the Earth will not be there.
