12th Jun: Talks come to an end
12 June 2009

International climate talks in Bonn come to an end today and the signs aren't good.

It appears that the progress that was hoped for has not been made.

Climate talks in Bonn have come to an end.

Rich countries are required to set new targets for reducing their carbon dioxide emissions this month.

But most are stalling and have not agreed strong and credible targets during the talks.

Global effort

There was also no consensus on how developed countries will help developing countries. The developing world urgently needs both:

  • Finance
To tackle the impacts of climate change.
  • Technology
    For sustainable development.

Must do more

To avoid catastrophic climate change rich countries must:

  • Cut their emissions
by at least 40% by 2020 at home
  • Provide support
via finance and technology for developing countries to tackle climate change.

Progress needed

The UK must stop attempts to expand offsetting. Instead it must show leadership by taking real action at home.

Developed countries' refusal to set adequate targets is preventing progress in other aspects of the international negotiations.

Protesters call for
just agreement in
Copenhagen

This blockage must be overcome to get talks moving as we head toward crucial climate talks in Copenhagen later this year.
