In 1982, the UK nuclear industry set up Nirex, the Nuclear Industry Radioactive
Waste Executive, to develop a programme of underground disposal for these wastes.
In 1992, Nirex announced that it planned to begin underground construction work at Sellafield in Cumbria.
Friends of the Earth is deeply concerned that the current proposal is premature as insufficient preparatory work has been carried out.
From September 1995 to February 1996 a Planning Inquiry into Nirex's proposal was held.
