Reducing livestock production impact must be an urgent priority
Commenting on a new study by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) which says greenhouse gas emissions from livestock can be cut by 30%, Friends of the Earth Food Campaigner Vicki Hird said:
“This report rightly highlights the huge impact livestock production has on our climate – reducing it must be an urgent priority for industry and governments around the world.
“But moving to industrial-style livestock farming systems that guzzle water and eat up land are not the solution. This would have a major impact on small-scale producers and the wider environment.
“The study’s failure to highlight the benefits of reducing meat and dairy consumption is a major omission - this would significantly cut emissions and lead to healthier diets.”
