Amend the Planning Bill
4 June 2013

Northern Ireland's most precious places are under threat.

The Northern Ireland Environment Minister intends to introduce new economic considerations into the planning system. Friends of the Earth believes these new considerations will result in the effective dismantling of planning.

A good planning system gives an economy consistency, fairness and direction. The propsed amendments will result in

  • weakening and slowing down of the planning system by encouraging more speculative applications
  • increased likelihood of legal challenges
  • confusion in the interpretation of planning policy
  • inconsistency in decision making.

Friends of the Earth is opposed to the 2013 Planning Bill, its underlying assumptions and the damage it will do to an already weakened planning system.

The proposed Bill will have far reaching and adverse implications for communities, the business sector and the future of Northern Ireland's environment.
