Friends of the Earth is holding a training event on Northern Ireland’s
planning system, on Saturday 10 June in Belfast. The aim of the event
is to demystify the planning system and provide campaigners and people
in local communities with the knowledge and confidence to participate
in it.
The training event will be both informative and interactive and is
ideally suited for anyone concerned about issues such as: development
that destroys wildlife, unsympathetic coastal development, unfettered
development in conservation areas or bungalow blight in the countryside.
Deborah McLaughlin of Friends of the Earth explained:
"Participants will find out how the planning system works and
obtain practical tips for shaping their community. They will also learn
how to write an objection letter, how to get involved in their area
plans, learn about tree preservation orders and have the opportunity
to discuss the issues with like-minded individuals”.
The training session will be delivered by Clive Mellon of Allen & Mellon
Environmental Ltd. Clive formerly worked at RSPB for 15 years, where
he used the planning system to prevent loss or damage to important
wildlife sites. This included participation in several major public
inquiries.
Friends of the Earth is covering most of the costs but there is a charge
of £15 to cover your lunch and written materials. To find out
more or to book your place for the event, please contact Deborah McLaughlin:
