Friends of the Earth welcomes new Environment Minister
23 June 2009
Commenting on the appointment of Edwin Poots as the new Environment Minister, Friends of the Earth campaigner Lisa Fagan said:
"We welcome Edwin Poots to the environment portfolio and look forward to working closely with him to help deliver a greener, safer future for us
all.
"We hope Mr Poots agrees with the overwhelming scientific evidence, accepted by the DUP, that climate change is human-induced, and takes tough action to curb Northern Ireland's carbon emissions. This will help protect people from unstable fuel prices and create new green collar jobs in renewable energy and home insulation.
"We urge the new Minister to introduce a Climate Bill at Stormont, requiring mandatory annual cuts in Northern Ireland's carbon emissions, and develop a Planning Policy Statement on climate change, reflecting the critical role of the planning system in delivering a low-carbon economy."
