Trimble to attend Earth Summit
8 August 2002
Friends of the Earth has warmly welcomed the news that the First Minister, David Trimble, will be attending the Earth Summit in Johannesburg later this month. John Woods, Friends of the Earth's Head of Campaigns, said:
"We are delighted that Mr Trimble has decided to attend the Earth Summit. It is a sign of an outward looking Northern Ireland that we are willing to play our part in tackling the twin global challenges of poverty and environment."
He continued:
"People in Northern Ireland have always given generously to those suffering from poverty around the world. But perhaps we have been a little slow to appreciate how our abuse of the environment affects the poorest and most vulnerable in the least developed countries. The First Minister's leadership on this issue is very welcome. We hope his will be a strong voice calling for action on issues such as climate change and the accountability of large corporations."
