Why Join Friends of the Earth?

Friends of the Earth is the UK's most influential environmental campaigning organisation and part of the most extensive environmental network in the world, but we can only be successful with a strong team of volunteers and employees. We look after our employees by supporting their learning and development with a range of benefits and a flexible employment package.

"Green is Working": green economy workers and supporters walking towards Downing Street

We see things differently and know there are ways to fix the problems on our planet:

  • We want to see nature being better protected and recovering.
  • And we want to see people across the world enjoying a better standard of living.

We're famous for:

  • Winning the world's first climate change law
  • That green recycling bin on your doorstep
  • Support for green energy.

Individuals are our lifeblood. We rely on people who want to protect the environment - and want to help.

So what's it like to work for Friends of the Earth? Well, here's what staff have to say:

The Bee Cause at Wimbledon 2012

'I've worked at Friends of the Earth for four years and I love it. The work couldn't be more important - campaigning for a world where everyone can survive and thrive - and our continued success on things like the Climate Change Act or saving the UK solar industry keep me really motivated.

We're relentlessly ambitious, trying to change politics to change the world. But our incredible supporters, local groups, volunteers and staff give me daily confidence that if anyone's going to do it, we will.' - Oliver Hayes, Campaigner

Adeela Warley, our Head of Communications, says:

  • It's rewarding because I am able to develop my professional expertise and apply this to the cause I passionately care about.
  • It's a privilege to work with so many expert, talented and hugely ambitious people who want to make the world a better place.
  • No two days are the same, there's always a new challenge and sense of achievement.
  • I'm proud to say I work for such a successful and well respected charity.

'It's so inspiring to be part of an organisation that is actually changing the UK for the better both through government with initiatives like the Climate Change Act and through influencing people's day-to-day values and behaviours with campaigns like our Bee Cause campaign. Across the organisation there is a feeling of possibility so it came as no surprise to me when my team, my line manager and HR were happy to help me make flexible working arrangements so that I could pursue university study outside of work'. -Duncan Walker, IS Solutions Analyst

A little bit more about us

Working culture

  • Our decision-making is based on a balance of three things:
  • Quality of a decision (not all decisions have to be perfect)
  • Timeliness of the decision; also are demands on staff reasonable?
  • Support: gaining understanding - support - delivery.

Diversity and equal opportunities

We judge a person on your ability to do the job - and nothing else.

Organisational structure

We have around 160 paid staff in our London head office and smaller offices across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Volunteers make a big contribution in all these offices.

Everyone has a line manager who provides support, development and coaching.

Our strategy sets out what we aim to achieve, from here to 2050, with a number of long and shorter term targets:

A. Our Vision - the world we want to see: a new, positive relationship between people and the environment.

B. Our Mission is to unite, inspire and empower people to take urgent action needed to protect the environment for current and future generations.

C. Our current campaigns

  • The Bee Cause: to help save British bees from habitat loss, disease, and climate change.
  • Clean British Energy: to help millions of people around the country plug into affordable clean power and end the scandal of dangerously cold homes.
  • Make it Better: A new campaign from November, tackling the impacts of everyday high street products and brands, exposing impacts of some well-loved products, showcasing exciting eco-design alternatives and looking to ensure that the products we love are made in ways we like.

D. Our programmes: with our longer-term strategy, we also concentrate on:

  1. Climate and Energy Security: reducing the carbon impacts of the electricity sector and pushing for more renewable energy faster, and less energy waste.
  2. Land, Food and Water Security: ensuring we do not lose renewable resources and fresh water.
  3. Nature and Ecosystems Security: demonstrating the importance of a thriving natural world
  4. Economics and Resource Use: creating a vision of a green economy and how to achieve it.
  5. Fair and Planned Transition: developing our understanding of what a fair transition to sustainable development looks like in practice.
  6. Engagement: involving more people in our work with a thriving grassroots and a network able to bring about change.
  7. Organisational Excellence: by 2014 we will be equipped to deliver increasingly ambitious work for the rest of the decade.
