Friends of the Earth makes life better for people by inspiring solutions to environmental problems. You will play a key role in delivering this through developing new income-generating opportunities.
In this exciting role you'll have a unique opportunity to shape the funding portfolio of the UK's leading environmental campaigning charity.
With an entrepreneurial, 'can do' approach and the ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team, drawing resources from around the organisation, you'll scope, develop and deliver new income-generating opportunities. You'll work across everything from mass audience to bespoke, high-value income activities to support Friends of the Earth's strategy and income growth objectives.
Joining our Fundraising and Supporter Development team, you'll be a skilled fundraiser with experience of developing new income-generating activities across various income streams and a strong understanding of the funding trends in the sector. You'll possess excellent relationship management skills and have the ability and confidence to influence at all levels both internally and externally.
In addition to developing new opportunities, you'll manage a small, high-performing team, to further develop income streams in their infancy.

This is an exciting role with the opportunity to lead on a range of fundraising activities. In this role you will be responsible for scoping the fundraising marketplace, identifying new opportunities for Friends of the Earth, and then developing, testing and establishing these new income streams.
The Business Development Team was established as a result of the Fundraising Investment Strategy which aims to significantly grow our annual income over the next three years. Now in its third year, Business Development will be key to diversification of the activity portfolio to decrease over-reliance on existing income generating activities and increase our ability to engage with and develop the value of existing and new audiences.
Our new audience strategy has identified and researched the most valuable public audience segments for Friends of the Earth, providing an invaluable resource for new product development.
The role of Business Development Manager is key to diversifying the number and type of products that we offer supporters, and in doing so, drives income growth to support our work. The area has no bias to a particularly fundraising area or channel - it's about what works.
To date, the role has introduced three new income streams (challenge events (e.g. Big Green Bike Ride), a gala event (The Extraordinary Banquet) and business engagement. The Business Development Manager has also led on scoping new areas of opportunity such as crowdfunding.
The Business Development Manager currently line-manages one role: the Events Fundraiser. In addition to providing strategic guidance and supporting the ongoing development of this area, you will scope and develop new income-generating products.
The purpose of the team is to:
· Identify and scope new income generating products and activities.
· Develop ideas and progress them from conception to delivery where there isn't existing resource or capacity (or pilot until established).
· Monitor and evaluate new activities, and produce projections and recommendations for future development.
· Support existing teams in developing products and activities with fundraising potential.
As Business Development Manager you will:
- Identify new fundraising opportunities that will engage both existing and new supporters, assessing the viability and developing a business cases for building into the fundraising portfolio
- Plan and project manage new fundraising initiatives from concept stage through product development, testing and evaluation, making recommendations for roll-out that will achieve set objectives and budgets
- Secure internal buy-in and support for new fundraising products and initiatives
- Lead project teams that will include colleagues from across the organisation, embracing expertise and internal knowledge and identifying interdependencies to ensure successful delivery of new products

Represent Friends of the Earth to high value supporters (individuals and businesses) securing financial and non-financial support in line with organisational objectives.
Influence colleagues across the organisation to secure support and resource for new activities.
Develop and maintain contact with sector colleagues in similar roles to keep abreast of new fundraising trends and techniques.
Ideas and Solutions
Utilise problem solving tools and techniques to problem solve and evaluate projects and provide informed recommendations.
Prepare and agree income and expenditure forecast budgets and targets, and monitoring and tracking results.
Expertise
Experience of developing new income-generating products or activities in a charitable organisations.

Your Salary and Benefits
The starting salary is from £24,224 to £34,810 a year. For part-time hours, the salary is a percentage of that.
The maximum full-time salary is £37,197 a year.
We don't negotiate the pay levels, instead we ensure that everyone in our organisation is paid fairly by starting you on a pay level that reflects the knowledge, skills and experience you show us during the recruitment process.
Our pay structure rewards you as you improve in your job towards the maximum salary.
Holiday
Holiday entitlement starts at 25 days paid holiday per year. You get an extra day for every full year of continuous employment, up to a maximum of 30 days. Plus: we value and reward long service with extra days after 5, 10 and 15 years.
Pension
You can choose from a range of socially responsible funds. You can invest from 3% of your salary up to 100%; we'll match what you put in by up to a maximum of 7% of your salary. Don't forget - your pension contribution is deducted from your salary before tax is applied to the salary.
Life Assurance
We also provide life assurance for all our employees. We'll pay out 4 x your annual salary in the event of your death while you are employed by us.
Loans
We offer interest free loans (maximum total £5,000) for the following:
- Season ticket - up to £5,000.
- Bicycle - up to £5,000 to buy a pedal bicycle for travel to and from work.
- Personal Development - up to £2,000 to pay for courses that are not work related.
Childcare vouchers
You can use some of your gross salary to buy childcare vouchers, as a 'salary sacrifice' scheme: this means you don't have to pay tax or National Insurance on the value of the vouchers.
Learning and Development
We want to ensure that at the heart of our organisation we have well-trained, well-performing, self-confident staff. To enable this, we offer a range of internal courses to all staff - and encourage new staff to participate in a number of those during their probationary period. We also support learning and development through external courses.
Flexi time scheme
We have a flexi time scheme which applies to most of our jobs. We all work our contracted hours between 8.00 am and 8.00 pm. If you need to work longer hours than your contract states, simply record that extra time and agree flexi leave with your line manager.

You can apply for flexible working after six months employment. This can be:

We have around 160 paid staff in our London head office and smaller offices across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Volunteers make a big contribution in all these offices.
