FOE Urges Government to Back Energy Saving Measure in Tonight's Finance Bill Debate
In anticipation of tonight's key vote on New Clause 10, proposed for the Finance Bill, which allows for relief from VAT on certain energy-saving materials in the home, Charles Secrett, Director of Friends of the Earth stated:
"It is utterly ridiculous that the Government, at the urge of the Treasury, are planning to scupper this vital measure.
New Clause 10 is a very significant amendment, which we urge the Government to accept. It will give a much needed boost to the energy conservation industry in Britain, helping create thousands of jobs and cut pollution by encouraging home owners to invest in energy conservation measures, such as insulation materials, draft proofing and double glazing.
The amendment has wide all-Party support. Friends of the Earth warmly welcome the commitment of the Labour Party's own Treasury team to back this Clause, announced today for the first time. The Parliamentary Labour Party are now wholly behind this measure, as are the Liberal Democrat and Ulster Union Parties. Importantly, at least eight Conservative MPs also support the amendment.
The Government must not block this initiative. If they do, they will make a mockery of their own energy conservation policies.
