Friends of the Earth has today welcomed proposals from environment ministers to improve legal protection for the country's best wildlife habitats.
Tony Juniper, Friends of the Earth's Policy and Campaigns Director, and Chair of the Wildlife Link working group that has drafted proposals to protect Britain's best wildlife areas and threatened species, said:
If these proposals from the Environment Department are turned into new laws we will have about sixty per cent of what is needed. This is a very good start. But the key question now is a political one. If nothing appears in the next Queen's Speech then we will be no further forward. Number Ten and the Prime Minister must give Parliamentary time for these proposals. If not they will have broken their promise to put the environment at the heart of government. The future of Britain's wildlife is now very much in the hands of Mr Blair.
