Press Release

Prescott's global warming roadshow - a chance to have your say

12 Jan 1999

Over the next few weeks John Prescott, and other Government Ministers, are touring the country to consult with the public over the UK's programme to cut climate-changing pollution. Members of the public attending the events will be able to question Ministers and demand more investment in public transport, energy saving and green energy to bring jobs, better health and a more secure future to the people of Britain.

Friends of the Earth, which is speaking at the regional events, is calling for the Government to keep to its manifesto commitment of a 20% cut in carbon dioxide emissions (the main greenhouse gas) by 2010. FOE will be revealing how this could create over 230,000 new jobs in the renewable energy, energy efficiency and transport sectors. FOE will also be advising people how they can do their bit to cut pollution and help protect the climate.

Charles Secrett, Director of Friends of the Earth, said:
“We're pleased that the Government is seeking the views of the British public on how to create jobs by cutting greenhouse gas pollution. We are already suffering the effects of a changing climate, but investing in cleaner, greener technologies to cut emissions can be good for all of us - for jobs, our health and the well-being of future generations. We strongly urge people to go along and have their say.

The events are taking place at the following places throughout January:
14 January     Plymouth    15 January     Nottingham     18 January     Bolton
21 January     Reading     25 January     Durham        27 January     Cambridge
