Press Release

Government refuses to release secret dam study

02 Jul 1999

Mr Wilson's letter also tacitly confirms that the existing secret environmental statement would be an embarrassment if published by stating that a second study is to be carried out. Friends of the Earth says that DTI should not consider further a Balfour Beatty's export credit insurance application until a full environmental, social and political impact study has been completed, published and debated.

Friends of the Earth is now considering if it will take its legal challenge forward on revised grounds under further provisions of freedom of information laws. In the meantime, FOE will be leafleting DTI staff tomorrow morning (Friday 2 July) at their headquarters in London during a demonstration supported by British Kurdish groups.

Tony Juniper, Policy and Campaigns Director at Friends of the Earth, said:
“Mr Wilson is on the run. The environmental impact documents they have on this dam are so bad that they've had to commission another study.Friends of the Earth will now be reviewing its legal options to try and obtain the first environmental study. This project is a dam disgrace, how the DTI can square this with an ethical foreign policy and commitments to open Government is a total mystery”.
