The blame for the failure of this week's international climate summit rests with the United States and its supporters in the “umbrella” group (Canada, Japan, Australia etc) Friends of the Earth said today. These countries scuppered the talks by demanding a series of concessions to prevent them having to make any meaningful cuts in their greenhouse gas emissions at home.
Liana Stupples Campaigns Director at Friends of the Earth, said:
“Mr Prescott put tremendous effort into securing an agreement on climate change and we congratulate him for this. But it is wrong to blame the French for a problem created by the US and its supporters. The bottom line is they were not prepared to make the modest cuts in greenhouse gases that the Kyoto protocol required. Climate change is the biggest environmental threat facing the planet. It is essential that politicians now put aside their differences and work together to divert us from the climatic crash course on which we have embarked. If they don't ,future generations will not forgive them.”
