PLANNING OVERHAUL BAD FOR ENVIRONMENT

06 Nov 2001

RADICAL OVERHAUL OF PLANNING:
BAD FOR DEMOCRACY AND ENVIRONMENT

Friends of the Earth today attacked Government plans to overhaul the planning system.Lord Falconer was due to tell the CBI conference today that the system needed to be speeded up.

Dr Hugh Ellis, Planning Campaigner for Friends of the Earth said:

“Government plans to speed up the planning system for major projects will ride rough-shod over local democracy and environmental considerations. The cards are already stacked in favour of the developers. Now the Government wants to change the rules to meet the needs of the CBI. Making the planning system less accountable will increase frustration and lead to bigger protests against large developments.”
