NUCLEAR POWER - UNSAFE, UNECONOMIC, UNPOPULAR

22 Jan 2002

Energy Minister Brian Wilson today insisted on the Today Programme that nuclear power has a part to play in the future of Britain's energy provision.

Mr Wilson's comments followed speculation that recommendations in a government-commissioned review of Britain's future energy needs cast doubts on the future viability of nuclear energy.

Bryony Worthington, Energy Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:

“Mr Wilson is a pro-nuclear minister with a nuclear power station in his constituency. He mustn't let his prejudices blind him to the dangers of persisting with this discredited technology. Nuclear power is unsafe, uneconomic and unpopular. It creates a growing mountain of nuclear waste which will remain a serious threat to health for tens of thousands of years. The energy review must call for a massive investment in the clean, green and safe alternative of renewable energy.”
