The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee today released its report on Radioactive Waste Policy. The
Inquiry, which was held at the end of last year, looked at the Government's five year consultation on radioactive
waste, which was launched on September 12th 2001.
Commenting, Rachel Western, FOE Nuclear Campaigner, said:
"There is no solution to the problem of radioactive waste. However it is possible for Government and industry
to make important changes to current practices to ensure major improvements. Nirex should be set up as an
independent body, BNFL should phase out reprocessing, and plutonium must be treated as waste.
Today's committee report, which urgently calls for the establishment of a new policy body to carry forward the
present review, is warmly welcomed by Friends of the Earth."
