US vice President Dick Cheney is due to visit London on Monday (11 March)
for talks with Tony Blair. Friends of the Earth is calling on the British
Prime Minister to make it clear to Mr Cheney that US refusal to take
effective action on climate change is totally unacceptable. The visit, which
is expected to focus on the war on terrorism, may also cover controversial
topics such as the recently announced US levy on steel imports and global
warming.
Tony Juniper, director designate at Friends of the Earth said:
Mr Blair should make it clear to Mr Cheney that US refusal
to tackle climate change is selfish and arrogant. Most of the world
has given its backing to the Kyoto climate treaty, but the USA, the world's
biggest polluter, is refusing to take action.
Mr Blair should press for an energy tax on US-manufactured goods in retaliation for President Bush's steel levy and Kyoto snub. It's time the US was forced to face up to its global responsibilities.
