Friends of the Earth today repeated its call for the National Audit Office to investigate the Government’s management of state-owned British Nuclear Fuels Ltd, as company chairman Mr. Hugh Collum was given a ten per cent pay rise the day before the company is expected to announce £2 billion losses.
The huge losses, which show yet again that nuclear power is completely uneconomic, will be a set back for Ministers, and Tony Blair in particular, who are known to favour a new generation of nuclear plants.
Roger Higman, Nuclear Campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said:
“The scale of these anticipated losses is staggering. They underline
the fact that nuclear power is completely uneconomic. It beggars belief
that the nuclear industry wants to build new nuclear power stations,
and that Ministers appear to be giving this serious consideration. It’s
high time the Government put an end to this nuclear madness and told
BNFL that it’s future lies in the £200 billion worldwide market
for nuclear clean-up and waste management.
“British Nuclear Fuels is haemorrhaging money at the tax payers’ expense – yet the Government has rewarded its Chairman with a ten per cent pay rise. There is an urgent need for a National Audit Office inquiry into the Government’s management of BNFL.”
