The Summit, which starts in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 26th August, is a crucial once-in-a-decade event to tackle global problems concerned with poverty and environmental degradation. Friends of the Earth is calling on world leaders at the Summit to introduce global rules for business to protect communities and the environment from the damage caused by corporate activities.
Mike Childs, Earth Summit Co-ordinator at Friends of the Earth, said:
Michael Meacher is well respected around the world because he understands his brief and gets stuck in to the detail. His absence will be a major loss. If the British Government does not think his presence is crucial, Friends of the Earth does, and that is why we are prepared to pay for him to attend. His contribution could be key.
