Press Release

MEACHER BACK ON EARTH SUMMIT TEAM

08 Aug 2002

Friends of the Earth today welcomed news that Environment Minister Michael Meacher will be part of Britain’s delegation at the Earth Summit in Johannesburg. Earlier this week Friends of the Earth offered to pay for Mr Meacher’s air fare and accommodation following reports that he would be left at home.

Mike Childs, Earth Summit co-ordinator for Friends of the Earth said:

“We are delighted that Mr Meacher will be going to the Earth Summit. It was absurd to consider leaving him at home. His knowledge and commitment could prove to be essential.

“The Government must now concentrate on the important issue of making the Earth Summit a success. The world must tackle the twin evils of poverty and environmental degradation, and ensure that the interests of big business do not drown out the real needs of people and the environment.”
