CANADA SLAMMED OVER KYOTO FAILURE

09 Aug 2002

Along with the US, Australia and Japan, Canada formed part of the so-called "Umbrella" Group, which tried at UN successive Climate Summits to frustrate agreement on binding greenhouse gas emissions targets. Canada agreed in Kyoto to cut its emissions to 1990 levels by 2008-2012. But by 1999 its emissions were 15% higher than in 1990.

Friends of the Earth International Climate Campaigner Kate Hampton said:

"This delay is unacceptable. It threatens the future of the Kyoto Treaty and shows that the Canadian government is not taking the Earth Summit seriously. Mr Anderson's criticism of the European Union is a ridiculous smokescreen, given that the EU has already ratified the Kyoto treaty. Canada must finally find the nerve to declare its independence from the US, and take action to fight man-made climate change, the gravest environmental threat now facing the planet."
