Press Release

MEACHER GAGGED AT EARTH SUMMIT?

28 Aug 2002

Friends of the Earth today learnt from authoritative media sources that Environment Minister Michael Meacher, the Government’s leading expert on environmental issues, has been blocked from speaking to the press at the Earth Summit. The Minister has a reputation for speaking the truth.

He is in Johannesburg following a public outcry at plans to leave him off the UK delegation.

Mike Childs, Earth Summit Coordinator for Friends of the Earth, said:

Gagging Michael Meacher shows how much the Government doesn’t want people to know what’s really happening at the Earth Summit. First he’s told he can’t go and then he’s told that he can go but he doesn’t seem to be allowed to speak to the press. Michael Meacher has clearly upset his bosses in Whitehall by telling the truth and caring about the environment.
