POWELL JEERED AT EARTH SUMMIT

04 Sep 2002

Colin Powell shouldn’t have been surprised to be heckled during his speech at the Earth Summit Friends of the Earth said today. The US Secretary of State was booed and jeered throughout his speech as he sought to put a positive spin on US wrecking tactics at the summit and its failure to take effective action in protecting the world’s environment.

Tony Juniper, Vice-chair of Friends of the Earth International, who was present during Colin Powell’s speech said:

Colin Powell shouldn’t have been surprised at the hostile reaction he got from delegates throughout his speech. When the US forms world coalitions it expects others to join in. But when the rest of the world joins forces to protect the world’s environment the US arrogantly opts out. Mr Powell’s contribution has done nothing to repair the Bush administrations declining reputation. US voters should take note and ensure that their next President turns the US from rogue nation to a more responsible member of the world community.”
