The Governments chief scientific advisor Professor David King
said today that nuclear power is needed to cut greenhouse gases
Friends of the Earths nuclear campaigner Bryony Worthington said
We dont need more nuclear power stations to fight climate
change. What we need is determined and co-ordinated Government
action to tackle this urgent problem.
A massive investment in renewable energy, a drive
against energy inefficiency and the modernisation of our
coal-fired power stations, which are among the oldest and most inefficient
in the world, would lead to massive reductions
in carbon dioxide emissions. Nor should transport policy be ignored.
Allowing more cars on to our roads and more planes into the skies
is not sustainable and cannot be allowed to continue.
Nuclear power is not the answer to our energy problems, and it
is not the answer to fighting climate change. The
nuclear industry has promised much but delivered little
except an expensive and toxic legacy for future generations to deal
with.
